There’s no doubt that when you’re feeling positive you’re happier and life is more pleasurable. There is so much more to positive thinking though than having an upbeat attitude. It creates real value in your life by opening up your mind to possibilities which result in allowing you to build skill sets that improve your health, work, relationships and more.
Feeling positive stems from your mind and the way that you’re thinking. Did you know that you can actually control your mind and choose the way you think? Nevertheless this is sometimes easier said than done. Choosing your thoughts isn’t something we are taught to do from a young age, so in everyday moments we react to situations and allow our preceding thoughts, good or bad, to take over and impact the way we feel. This results in having our mind control us instead of the other way round. Learning to change your thought patterns is like changing a habit you’ve been doing for your whole life. It is a journey and is difficult in the beginning. It takes commitment, determination and perseverance.
I understand and believe in the power of positive thinking and choosing your thoughts wisely, but I am still in the beginning of the process and sometimes there are those days/times when I’m feeling negative and can’t seem to turn it around.
If you can relate and experience this from time to time then I hope these tips will help you like they do me.
BRING MORE POSITIVITY INTO YOUR LIFE WITH THESE 6 STEPS:
1. READ, LISTEN, WATCH
Feed your mind with information that inspires you. This can be in ways of audio and podcasts, reading books and brilliant blogs and watching programs that educate and motivate you. Continually feeding your mind with positive and encouraging material is just another way to strengthen and train you to handle negative situations. I have people I look up to; authors, bloggers, motivational speakers etc. I make sure to read, watch and listen to something from them every single day.
2. STOP, BREATHE AND SMILE
It is so go, go, go in our modern day society that before you know it you’re suddenly feeling stressed and overwhelmed about your crazy big to-do list. Bring yourself back to the present by simply stopping. No matter where you are or what you’re doing, stop, take a few deep breaths and smile. I know this might seem simple, but try it now, yes right now. Close your eyes, take a deep breath and smile. Maybe you’ll even begin to giggle to yourself. Now how do you feel? Better? That’s what I thought :). Use your breath as a tool to connect you with the present moment.
3. CREATE A POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT
We all know those people that you come into contact with who immediately bring your energy levels down. They seem to be whinging, complaining or gossiping about something or someone in every conversation. If there are people in your life who constantly bring you down, start spending less time with them. Surround yourself with positive, optimistic people who encourage and support you and make you feel better, do better and want you to be the best version of yourself.
What are you watching on TV or reading in magazines? Many of these things are toxic and fill your mind with poisonous thoughts. I’ve made a habit of staying away from the news which is flooded with negativity!
Ask yourself these questions:
- who are the 2 most negative people I spend time with?
- what are the 2 most negative sources of information I spend time on?
4. BE POSITIVE TOWARDS OTHERS
I’m a big believer in law of attraction. Want more positivity in your life? Then give out more positivity. Be nice to others, ask how they’re doing and give them a genuine compliment. Tell your parents/children how much you love them. Listen and support people when they’re feeling down. Give credit where credit is due and never forget to say thank you, not matter how small the gesture.
The more you shine positivity on others, the more you are practicing and attracting it in your own life.
5. GIVE THANKS
Practice giving thanks! Be grateful for the blessings you have in your life, and appreciate and honour the struggles too as they help us grow and evolve into stronger and better people.
6. CHASE YOUR DREAMS
Set goals and do something each day to work towards them. Goals will give you focus and purpose and will ensure you are following your passion and working towards living the life of your dreams. If you take a step each day, even if it’s small, you are one step closer towards reaching your goals. This consistent practice will fill you with feelings of accomplishment and positivity.
One important thing I’ve learnt is not to strive for positivity perfection. Life throws us curve balls and we are all going to have those times when we feel like hiding away from the world.
Cultivating these practices is not about helping you to glaze over and ignore the negative things, but it will help you approach situations in life with an optimistic and open mind. Creating this habit is a skill set which will benefit you in every single aspect of your life.
